Hello, brave Korean learners!

It's me, Ari! Today's newsletter is about girls' love in Kdrama, a fantastic classic guitar play, and an important announcement. Let's start!πŸ“’

πŸ‘©β€β€οΈβ€πŸ‘© L of LGBT Has Finally Arrived in Kdrama

LGBT has long been a taboo in my country. South Korea does not allow same sex marriage. Not a single famous Kpop idol or actors/actresses has came out yet. But recently, with the growing popularity of BL(Boys' Love) & GL(Girls' Love) fanfictions and webtoons, Korean media is slowly embracing LGBT, especially L. You can see this trends in two recent Kdramas, Mine☝️ and Nevertheless. In Mine, the lead character who is played by Kim Seo-Hyung, the star actress of Sky Castle, is a lesbian who married to a man but later came out. In Nevertheless, a supporting character likes her same-sex school friend. Many Koreans were shocked to see a scene from Mine where the lead character confesses to her husband that she's a lesbian. It was very new for many Korean Kdrama fans and some young Koreans welcomed it, saying 'My country is finally changing!' Both dramas are available on Netflix so watch them to see how this country is changing :D

πŸ‘©β€πŸ« What Google can't translate

Pick up a Korean expression that you can't learn from a textbook and also Google can't translate:

A 이/κ°€ λ¬΄λŒ€λ₯Ό μ°’μ—ˆλ‹€

It means 'A's performance was awesome!' though it literally means 'A ripped the stage.' It's a super popular slang between young Koreans. You can use this whenever you saw an awesome concert/singing/dance performance. For example,

λ°©λ°©μ½˜μ—μ„œ μ œμ΄ν™‰μ΄ λ¬΄λŒ€λ₯Ό μ°’μ—ˆλ‹€ (J-Hope's performance on BangBang Con was awesome!!)

🎸 What to listen to

Korean music has much more than Kpop. Let me introduce Park Gyu-Hee, a South Korean female classical guitarist who won 9 guitar contests in Europe. She recently appeared on Kim Ou-Joon's News Factory, the biggest news show in the country and played two songs: Recuerdos de la Alhambra and Tango En Skai. Listen now! It's really good 😍

πŸ“’ What to announce

LegitKon, a monthly Korean contest, is coming! Some of you might remember about the old LegitKon that was eventually cancelled a few months ago. The new✨ LegitKon will be different from that: 50 questions, take it in your own time, weekly updated top contestants' rankings, and most of all, it won't be cancelled! πŸ˜… Stay tuned!
